Show Me Who You Really Are
Damien awoke lying across Shayla’s bed, wrapped in her arms. He slowly wormed his way out of her grasp and slid off the bed. He quietly watched her sleep as he collected his things, slipping his shirt on over his head.
The sight of her scanty lingerie and sexy up-do reminded him of the task he failed to accomplish the night before. He pulled the covers over her and planted a soft kiss on her forehead, jumping backward as her hand reached out for him. She let out a sleep-soaked groan and rolled away from him.
He stilled. Holding his breath, we waited and prayed she didn’t wake up.
He was far too embarrassed by his meltdown to look at her in the waking hours. His mind was overloaded with the horrendous things she must be thinking about him. She’d held him in his time of need, but who wouldn’t cave in to a grown man blubbering like a child?
Grateful she was a heavy sleeper, he headed for the door. He tossed one last look over his shoulder before leaving her apartment, hoping he could swallow down the shame he was feeling and face her at work.
He made it to his car and climbed inside, surprised no one had broken into it yet. It was undeniable he had the nicest car in the parking lot, ten times over. Shayla’s place wasn’t exactly the Upper East Side.
Shifting his weight, he pulled his phone out and checked for missed calls, only wishing to see one name pop up. He let out a sigh as he made it to the end of the list and didn’t find Bradley’s name. He let his head fall back to settle against the headrest and fought the sickening feeling building in the pit of his stomach.
The thought of going to work soon without the support of his friend was almost unbearable. He gripped his steering wheel and let his mind focus on what Shayla said: they were brothers, and brothers fought.
Never like this, though. He buried the thought down and reassured himself again. At the end of the day, we’re still brothers. He clung to the thought and let it soak into him as he drove home, the hope Shayla had given him the only thing propelling him forward.
He made it home and dropped everything to the floor, heading straight for his bed. If he stayed awake any longer, his thoughts would only drift in and out of the dark places he wished to avoid. The best thing for him was to sleep until Bradley forgave him. He stretched himself over the high thread count comforter without changing out of his clothes and shut his eyes to the world.
The sound of someone banging on his door sent his eyes popping open. He lifted his head and looked around. He’d thought he’d only been sleeping for a moment, but the sun had started to dip below the horizon. Had he missed the entire day?
“Damien.” The sound of shouting accompanied the next round of harsh knocks on the door.
